    Lumbar Disc Regeneration Procedure

  • What is Lumbar Disc Regeneration Procedure, or LDR?

    Before

    Degenerative Disc Disease

    may result from injury or normal wear and tear on the disc. This change in the disc causes loss of the cushion effect between the bones or vertebral bodies in the spine. Pain is the outcome of the process of disc degeneration.

    After

    LDR or Lumbar Disc Regeneration Procedure, is a procedure in which Dr. Conn uses a naturally occurring substance from the human body that is an FDA approved Biologic. This Biologic is approved to patch leaks from tissue called dura, in both the spine and brain. LDR introduces the Biologic into damaged discs. This seals the disc, creating a platform for normal healthy disc material to grow and become a part of a more healthy disc. During the LDR process, damaged discs are restored back to their normal healthy height, as evidenced through live x-rays obtained during the LDR procedure.

  • INTERVERTEBRAL DISCS

    Between the vertebrae are intervertebral discs that are shock absorbers for the spine. The disc can be compared to a jelly donut, made up of an outer band called the annulus fibrosus and a gel-like inner substance called the nucleus pulposus.  Until now, we have not had a method to improve intervertebral disc health.  LDR is a paradigm shift in disc therapy. 

     

  • The process to determine the source of your pain is painless.

    These steps outline what happens next.

    1. MRI

    60 minutes

    MRI assists in evaluating the disc health and other spinal structures.  Sometimes other studies including CT or X-ray of the Lumbar Spine will also be requires.

    2. Discogram

    30 minutes

    The discogram is used to diagnose your pain source.  The procedure provides information regarding the overall health of the disc and the location of tears, furrows and leaks in the disc. It assists in deciding which discs would benefit from treatment with LDR.  

    3. LDR Procedure

    60 minutes

    During the procedure the disc is injected with sterile dye under pressure.  Both, your response to the injection, and the spreading pattern of the dye within the disc, help us make our decision about which discs need LDR treatment.

    4. A More Healthy Spine

    For many years to come

    After the procedure we recommend rest for the first 36 hours. You can then progress to walking for exercise for the next seven days.  Thereafter, slowly add more activity.

    These discogram images from the fluoroscope, or special X-ray machine, reveal a severely diseased and leaking L5-S1 disc.   Fortunately, all other discs appear healthy. In the same patient, these before and after X-rays of the LDR Procedure demonstrate immediate disc height improvement. The X-ray demonstrates the disc returned to normal height after LDR treatment.   The Lumbar Disc Regeneration components react immediately upon injection into the disc and become fixed and set within the disc to stop leakage and promote restoration. Afterwards, disc tissue regenerates and incorporates into the Biologic for up to one year.
